Where it came from
Released in 1971 by Decca, this recording of Gregorian chant features the Choeur des Moniales de l'Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Argentan under the direction of the esteemed Dom Joseph Gajard. The album serves as a scholarly exploration of the melodic modes that define the liturgical music of the Catholic Church. It emerged during a period of renewed academic and public interest in medieval plainchant, capturing the austere, monophonic beauty that Dom Gajard—a noted authority on Solesmes chant rhythm—worked tirelessly to preserve and disseminate through meticulous choral performances.
The production reflects the commitment of Decca’s classical division to high-fidelity documentation of liturgical traditions. The design and presentation were intended to evoke the quiet, devotional atmosphere of the abbey, prioritizing the purity of the human voice over studio artifice. Dom Gajard’s approach was widely respected by musicologists for its adherence to rhythmic nuances that had been debated for decades, and the recording remains a significant reference for students of religious music history.
