Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1978 on the IPG label, this recording serves as a pedagogical and spiritual document of traditional plainchant. It was produced in the wake of the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council, a period during which monastic communities sought to preserve the purity of Gregorian chant amidst changing ecclesiastical practices. The album features the Choeur des Moniales de l’Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Argentan under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, a renowned expert in the Solesmes method of chant interpretation.

The design of the record reflects the minimalist, contemplative nature of the monastic life it documents. Dom Joseph Gajard was instrumental in establishing the Solesmes style, which prioritizes the fluid, speech-like rhythm of the Latin text over strict metrical timing. Upon its release, the recording was primarily circulated within academic and liturgical circles, garnering respect for its archival quality and its role in maintaining the historical integrity of the Benedictine musical tradition.
