Provenance

Where it came from

This recording of Gregorian chant for Good Friday was released in 1986 by the World Record Club, a label historically known for distributing classical and specialized repertoire through subscription-based services. The album captures the Chœur Grégorien de Paris under the direction of François Polgár, an ensemble recognized for its commitment to the rhythmic and stylistic authenticity of liturgical plainchant. It was produced during a period when there was a sustained academic and popular interest in the meditative, monophonic structures of medieval sacred music, positioning this release as an accessible entry point for listeners seeking to experience the solemnity of the Tenebrae and the St. John Passion.

The album serves as a curated liturgical document, reflecting the aesthetic approach of François Polgár, who sought to balance historical research with the fluid, vocal qualities necessary for liturgical performance. The presentation emphasizes the meditative nature of the Gregorian tradition, stripping away polyphonic complexity to highlight the emotional weight of the Passion narrative. Within the broader context of mid-1980s classical music distribution, the World Record Club's release of this specific material helped maintain the visibility of early music within the domestic listening market, offering a scholarly yet devotional experience to a global audience.
