Chant Grégorien ∙ Noël (Messe De Minuit ∙ Messe Du Jour)

This recording features the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, a pivotal figure in the 20th-century revival of Gregorian chant. Produced by Decca, this release captures the precise, prayerful execution of the liturgy that became the hallmark of the Solesmes tradition. The monks at Solesmes were instrumental in transcribing and standardizing the rhythmic interpretation of chant, a project that sought to restore the fluidity and nuance of medieval manuscripts to contemporary religious practice.

The design and production of this recording reflect the mid-century intersection of liturgical scholarship and high-fidelity sound. By bringing the acoustic environment of the abbey into the homes of listeners, Decca utilized its technical expertise to preserve a tradition that had previously been confined to monastic enclosures. The release was widely regarded by musicologists and religious scholars as a definitive sonic document of the Roman Catholic tradition, praised for its clarity and the authentic atmospheric quality captured during the performance of the Midnight and Day Masses.
