Chant Grégorien - Pâques

Released in 1960 on the Decca label, this recording of Gregorian chant serves as a landmark document of the liturgical music tradition preserved at the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, the choir of monks sought to codify the rhythmic and melodic restoration of plainsong, a project that had been the focus of the monastery's scholarship for decades. By capturing the purity of the chant in a studio setting, the recording aimed to provide a definitive reference for the post-Vatican II era, emphasizing the nuanced, fluid phrasing characteristic of the Solesmes method.

The design and production of this series were intended to treat liturgical chant as a form of sacred art, moving it from the periphery of church utility into the wider sphere of classical and historical appreciation. The album cover reflects the understated, solemn aesthetic of mid-century religious recordings, focusing on the auditory experience of the monastic community. Upon its release, the record was well-received by both theological scholars and audiophiles, lauded for its technical clarity and for effectively documenting a performance practice that was increasingly influential in the Roman Catholic Church at the time.
