Chant Grégorien - Noël

This recording emerged from the long-standing tradition of the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes, who have been central to the preservation and dissemination of Gregorian chant since the 19th century. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, the choir became world-renowned for their authentic interpretation of liturgical music, emphasizing a melodic flow that avoids modern rhythmic constraints. This specific release on the Festival Classique label served to bring these meditative, ancient sounds to a wider post-war audience seeking spiritual solace through high-fidelity recordings.

The aesthetic and technical approach to this record focused on capturing the unique acoustics of the abbey church, which were integral to the monks' performance style. Dom Gajard, a rigorous scholar of paleography, sought to restore the purity of the chant by stripping away later accretions, a goal that resonated deeply with the mid-century liturgical revival movement. The recording was widely received by scholars and lay listeners alike as a definitive reference point for the study and practice of authentic plainchant.
