Where it came from
Released under the Art & Musique label, this recording features the Chœur des Moines de l'abbaye de Fontgombault performing traditional Gregorian chants centered on the liturgical themes of Christmas. The Abbaye de Fontgombault, a Benedictine monastery in France, is renowned for its commitment to the preservation of the Solesmes tradition of plainchant, which emphasizes a meditative, melismatic style intended to facilitate communal prayer rather than performative display.
The production design reflects the label's focus on sacred music, often utilizing minimalist, reverent photography or ecclesiastical imagery to underscore the monastic origins of the audio. These recordings have historically served as both devotional aids for the faithful and as essential reference points for musicologists and choral students interested in the authentic execution of the Gregorian repertoire, reflecting a mid-to-late 20th-century resurgence in interest regarding the meditative qualities of ancient liturgical music.
