Durban Highway / Epholela No. 2

Durban Highway / Epholela No. 2 was released in 1974 on the independent Kaya-Lami label, a cornerstone of the vibrant Mbaqanga music scene in South Africa during the 1970s. This genre emerged from the fusion of traditional Zulu vocal styles with Western instrumentation, becoming the primary soundtrack for the urban Black working class during a time of intense socio-political upheaval. Ntaba’s release captures the rhythmic, driving spirit of the era, reflecting a period where musicians navigated both censorship and the commercial expansion of the local recording industry.

The production on Kaya-Lami reflected the stripped-back, high-energy aesthetic favored by township radio stations and dance halls of the time. While Amakhwela Ntaba remains a niche figure in the broader discography of the genre, the label's output during this period is highly regarded by ethnomusicologists and collectors for its documentation of the Mbaqanga sound. The record serves as a sonic artifact of a specific cultural moment, representing the resilience and creative output of artists operating within the restrictive conditions of apartheid-era South Africa.
