Where it came from
Released in 1965 on the His Master's Voice label, this recording features the virtuoso violinist Régis Pasquier and renowned guitarist Oscar Ghiglia performing works by Niccolò Paganini. The selection highlights the unique instrumental interplay Paganini intended for this combination, showcasing a blend of his characteristic technical brilliance and lyrical, operatic influence. The recording was produced during a period when the chamber works of Paganini were receiving renewed academic and performance interest, moving beyond his more ubiquitous solo violin caprices.
The album serves as a document of the collaboration between Pasquier and Ghiglia, two respected European instrumentalists of the mid-twentieth century. By bringing together the Grande Sonate and the Six Sonatas of Op. 3, the record offers a comprehensive view of how Paganini adapted his virtuosic violin language to accommodate the guitar's textures. It was received by critics of the time as a refined, technically demanding interpretation that honored the specific nuances of the composer's duo-instrument repertoire.
