This recording features pianist Rudolf Buchbinder performing a selection of Joseph Haydn’s piano sonatas, released under the Swiss label Ex Libris. During the mid-20th century, Ex Libris was a notable cultural institution in Switzerland, functioning as a book and record club that provided accessible, high-quality classical recordings to a broad audience. The release captures a pivotal era in Buchbinder's career, as he established his reputation as one of the definitive interpreters of the Classical repertoire, particularly the works of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.

The technical design of this pressing reflects the standard aesthetic of the Ex Libris classical series, which prioritized clarity and fidelity over elaborate cover art. By focusing on the structural elegance of Haydn's Hob. XVI sonatas, Buchbinder sought to highlight the wit, formal innovation, and expressive depth inherent in these compositions. The recording was well-regarded among contemporary collectors for its precise articulation and faithful adherence to the score, solidifying the label's commitment to scholarly, performance-oriented classical music during the vinyl era.
