Where it came from
This 1981 release on the Poly label adapts Selma Lagerlöf’s 1906 literary classic, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, into a German-language audio drama. The production emerged during a period of heightened interest in the story, spurred by the popular 1980 Japanese anime television series that introduced a new generation of European audiences to the adventures of the diminutive Nils and his journey across Sweden with a flock of wild geese.
The record was produced as part of a series intended to bring classic children's literature to the burgeoning home audio market of the early 1980s. By distilling Lagerlöf’s epic narrative into a localized episodic format, Poly sought to maintain the whimsical, educational, and moral themes of the original text while utilizing the immersive medium of radio play-style storytelling, which remained a staple of German youth entertainment throughout the decade.
