Plain-Chant Grégorien

Released in 1977 on the Trianon label, this recording of Plain-Chant Grégorien captures the liturgical music tradition as performed by the Schola des Pères du Saint-Esprit de Chevilly. The record emerged during a period of sustained interest in monophonic sacred music, reflecting the commitment of religious communities to preserve the meditative and historical vocal traditions of the Catholic Church. By mid-century, these recordings served both as devotional aids for the faithful and as scholarly documents for listeners interested in the roots of Western musical notation and modal melody.

The Trianon imprint, often associated with Pathé-Marconi, frequently curated these specialized collections to bring liturgical works to a broader domestic audience. The performance by the Chevilly ensemble is noted for its austere, unadorned approach to the Gregorian repertoire, emphasizing the traditional cadence and communal texture of the chanting. It stands as a representative example of the liturgical music discography of the 1970s, which sought to bridge the gap between monastic life and the contemporary listener's appreciation for early sacred compositions.
