Where it came from
Released in 1974 by the Trianon label, this recording of Gregorian chant features the Schola des Pères du Saint-Esprit de Chevilly. The album was produced during a period when the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council had shifted the role of traditional chant, leading to a renewed archival interest in preserving the aesthetic and meditative qualities of medieval plainchant for a modern audience.
The recording reflects the classic, austere production standards of the Trianon label, which often curated French religious and classical music for general distribution. The ensemble’s performance emphasizes the monophonic, unaccompanied style characteristic of the genre, intended to evoke the contemplative atmosphere of monastic life and ensure the accessibility of these foundational Western musical forms for listeners outside of a strictly ecclesiastical setting.
