Where it came from
Released by the Erato label in 1957, this recording captures the Schola des Pères du Saint-Esprit de Chevilly performing traditional Gregorian chants. The album was part of Erato's dedicated mission during the mid-20th century to document liturgical music with high fidelity, preserving the austere beauty of the plainchant tradition as practiced within French ecclesiastical settings.
The recording features the deliberate, monophonic vocal style intended to evoke the contemplative atmosphere of the Catholic liturgy. The production reflects the aesthetic of the period, which favored natural acoustic environments to highlight the resonance of the chant, and the release was received as a scholarly contribution to the growing catalog of sacred music recordings available to the general public at the time.
