Where it came from
Released by Columbia in the mid-1950s, this recording captures the liturgical traditions of the Holy Week offices as performed by the Schola des Pères du Saint-Esprit de Chevilly. Under the direction of Lucien Deiss, a notable figure in post-Vatican II liturgical music and a prolific composer, the ensemble sought to preserve the meditative and monophonic purity of Gregorian chant during a period of transition in Catholic worship.
The album serves as a document of mid-century monastic performance practice, reflecting Deiss’s commitment to theological precision and musical authenticity. The recording was designed to function both as an educational resource and an immersive devotional aid, gaining recognition among scholars of sacred music for its disciplined vocal quality and its adherence to the traditional Solesmes style of interpretation.
