Symphonie No. 1 En Ré Majeur - Opus 25 "Classique" / Russlan Et Ludmilla / Dans Les Steppes De L'Asie Centrale / Une Nuit Sur Le Mont Chauve

Released in 1953 by Decca Records, this long-playing record (LXT 2833) captures the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire under the baton of Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet. The selection serves as a survey of Russian orchestral works, pairing Sergei Prokofiev's neoclassical Symphony No. 1 with atmospheric compositions by Glinka, Borodin, and Mussorgsky. This record stands as part of Decca's ambitious early ffrr (full frequency range recording) initiative, which aimed to bring high-fidelity sound quality to the home listener during the burgeoning age of the LP.

The production highlights Ansermet's precise, analytical approach to the Russian repertoire, characterized by a meticulous balance between orchestral texture and dynamic clarity. Recorded in Paris, the sessions reflect the high technical standards Decca maintained throughout the 1950s. While these works represent staple pieces of the orchestral canon, their grouping on this disc was intended to showcase both the versatility of the Conservatoire orchestra and the capabilities of Decca’s engineering team in capturing complex, multi-layered scores for the growing international classical music market.
