Where it came from
Backup Secretary was originally released as a Super Rare in the 2017 Starter Deck: Link Strike, marking its debut during the introduction of the Link Summoning mechanic in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. Its design, featuring a cybernetic assistant aesthetic, reflects the technological themes prevalent in the Cyberse-type monster category introduced during the VRAINS era. The card was intended to provide accessible support for Cyberse decks by allowing players to special summon it from their hand if they controlled a Cyberse monster, thereby facilitating the rapid setup of Link monsters.
The card was later included as an Ultra Rare in the 2021 Ghosts From the Past set, a supplemental release designed to highlight popular archetypes and provide reprints of essential utility cards for competitive play. As a staple engine piece for early Cyberse-heavy strategies, it was well-regarded for its simplicity and efficiency. While not a centerpiece of high-level tournament play, it remains a recognized example of the utility monsters that defined the Link Summoning transition.
