Giant Rat

The Giant Rat was originally introduced as a common card in the Metal Raiders expansion, but the version here originates from the Hobby League 3 participation set. This program was initiated by Upper Deck in the mid-2000s to incentivize local game store attendance, offering exclusive prize support for players participating in organized tournament play. These cards were specifically selected to reward competitive engagement, featuring an ultra-rare holographic treatment that distinguished them from their standard-issue counterparts.

The design of the card reflects the aesthetic of the early Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, characterized by a focus on Earth-attribute beast-type monsters that facilitate deck thinning through their special summoning effect. This particular card became a staple in tournament play due to its ability to pull other low-attack Earth monsters directly from the deck, a mechanic that defined much of the early game's strategic landscape. The Hobby League version is prized by collectors for its distinct foil pattern, which remains iconic among those who participated in the grassroots era of the game.
