Giant Rat

The Giant Rat first appeared as part of the Metal Raiders expansion in the early 2000s, designed as part of a cycle of EARTH-attribute monsters that could special summon others of their kind from the deck upon destruction. This mechanic was intended to provide deck thinning and board presence, quickly becoming a staple in competitive play for its ability to maintain field control in an era where monsters were frequently destroyed by battle.

The Retro Pack release, which included the RP01-EN067 iteration, served as a reprint collection intended to make foundational cards accessible to a new generation of players. The artwork, characterized by the whimsical yet aggressive aesthetic of early Yu-Gi-Oh! monster design, reflects the period's focus on creating distinct archetypes that relied on synergy and battlefield positioning rather than the complex combo-heavy interactions seen in later iterations of the game.
