Giant Rat

Giant Rat was first released as part of the Starter Deck: Yugi Evolution in 2004, a foundational product designed to introduce new players to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game mechanics while offering them a deck centered around the protagonist's themes. As an Earth-attribute monster, it belongs to a recurring archetype of recruiter cards that allow players to summon additional monsters from their deck upon destruction, a mechanic that defined the tactical flow of early competitive play.

The card was illustrated with a straightforward, illustrative style typical of the early Kazuki Takahashi era of card design, focusing on the creature's utilitarian function in a deck. Its popularity stemmed from its versatility and reliability in the meta-game of the mid-2000s, where its ability to maintain board presence by pulling other low-attack Earth monsters made it a staple in various deck builds, eventually leading to its inclusion in multiple reprint sets over the following years.
