Евгений Мравинский - Вебер: Увертюра к опере "Оберон"; Шуберт: Симфония №8; Шостакович: Симфония №5 / Evgeny Mravinsky - Weber: Ouverture To "Oberon"; Schubert: Symphony No. 8;

This collection represents a significant archival release from the Melodiya legacy, featuring live recordings conducted by the legendary Evgeny Mravinsky. Mravinsky was the longtime music director of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, and his interpretations of this specific repertoire are considered definitive documents of the Soviet conducting tradition. The release, issued through the Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga label in 2003, serves as a testament to the rigorous, precision-focused approach Mravinsky brought to both Romantic classics and the works of his contemporary, Dmitri Shostakovich.

The design and curation of this disc are typical of the post-Soviet efforts to digitize and preserve the vast tape archives of the Soviet era. By pairing Weber’s atmospheric 'Oberon' overture and Schubert’s 'Unfinished' symphony with Shostakovich’s monumental Fifth Symphony, the release emphasizes the breadth of Mravinsky’s technical command. These recordings were historically received as essential benchmarks, reflecting an era where the conductor’s intimate relationship with his orchestra allowed for an intensity of performance that remains highly regarded by classical music scholars and listeners today.
