Сергей Скрипка - Бизе-Щедрин: Кармен-сюита / Sergei Skripka - Bizet-Shchedrin: Carmen-Suite

The Carmen Suite was originally composed in 1967 by Rodion Shchedrin for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Shchedrin reimagined Georges Bizet’s opera score by stripping away the vocal lines and reinventing the instrumentation for strings and a vast array of percussion, creating a vibrant, percussive interpretation that bridges classical tradition and modernist vigor. This 2007 recording, conducted by Sergei Skripka, continues the long-standing tradition of Soviet and Russian orchestras championing this specific adaptation.

Sergei Skripka, a prominent figure in Russian orchestral music and the conductor of the Russian State Symphony Cinema Orchestra, brings a distinct clarity to this performance. Released by Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga Muzyka, the recording highlights the intricate, metallic textures of Shchedrin's orchestration. While the Carmen Suite is a fixture in the repertoire of major ensembles globally, this particular release serves as an accessible entry point to the work for contemporary listeners, capturing the precise, rhythmic energy that define the collaboration between Shchedrin and his Russian contemporaries.
