Евгений Светланов - Глазунов: Времена года / Evgeny Svetlanov - Glazunov: Seasons

This recording of Alexander Glazunov’s ballet 'The Seasons,' op. 67, captures the authoritative interpretation of conductor Evgeny Svetlanov, a pivotal figure in 20th-century Russian music. Released by Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga Muzyka in 2003, the disc showcases Svetlanov’s deep affinity for the Romantic Russian repertoire, a hallmark of his long and distinguished tenure with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra. His approach to Glazunov is widely regarded for its lush orchestration and structural clarity, effectively preserving a quintessentially Russian sound that Svetlanov spent his career championing.

The production serves as a testament to the enduring influence of the Russian school of conducting in the post-Soviet era. By the early 2000s, Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga sought to curate and archive significant performances from their vast library, making them available for international distribution. The design of the release reflects this archival intent, favoring a straightforward, classical aesthetic that emphasizes the gravitas of the score and the stature of the conductor rather than commercial ornamentation. It remains a respected reference recording for collectors interested in the late-Romantic tradition.
