Where it came from
Released in 2014, this third volume of popular songs by the Sretensky Monastery Choir continues the ensemble's mission of preserving and promoting Russian spiritual and folk musical traditions. The choir, which traces its history back to the 14th century, gained international prominence in the early 21st century for its polished performances that blend liturgical depth with accessible choral arrangements of classic Russian songs.
The collection features the choir's signature balanced, resonant vocal style, overseen by conductor Nikon Zhila. The selections reflect a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between traditional church music and the broader cultural canon, aimed at both preservationist listeners and those seeking a meditative listening experience. As an independently produced volume, it serves as a testament to the choir's dedicated following and their role as cultural ambassadors for the Russian Orthodox tradition.
