Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2013, Tiorba Obbligata showcases the specialized mastery of Madeleine Owen and the Montreal-based Ensemble La Cigale. The album was produced as a project to highlight the unique, deep resonance of the theorbo, a large lute with extended bass strings that was a staple of the Italian Baroque period. The recording serves as a scholarly yet accessible exploration of the instrument's role in the seventeenth-century Italian repertoire.

The production reflects the ensemble's focus on period-informed performance, emphasizing the delicate textural interplay between the theorbo and the supporting instrumental voices. By curating a selection of Italian works, the artists intended to bring the specific, melancholic beauty of the theorbo to a modern audience, receiving critical praise for its clear, atmospheric sound engineering and the technical precision of Owen’s performance.
