Where it came from
The 10 Euro 'Blue Bird' coin was issued by the Royal Belgian Mint in 2008 as part of a commemorative series celebrating the centenary of the birth of Maurice Maeterlinck’s most famous work, the play 'L'Oiseau bleu' (The Blue Bird). First performed in 1908, the play is a masterpiece of symbolist literature, exploring themes of happiness and the human search for meaning. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to Belgium's rich literary heritage and the international acclaim Maeterlinck achieved as a Nobel Prize laureate.
The coin's design features a stylized representation of the titular bird, crafted to evoke the ethereal and symbolic quality of the original stage play. It was created by the mint's design team to strike a balance between classic numismatic aesthetics and the whimsical, dreamlike atmosphere characteristic of Maeterlinck's writing. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors who specialize in European commemorative coinage and those interested in cultural and literary themes.
