2 Francs (Allied Occupation Coinage; silver)

The 1944 Belgian 2 Franc coin was minted as part of the Allied Military Currency program during the liberation of Europe from Axis control. As Allied forces moved through Belgium, there was an urgent need for a reliable, local-style circulating currency to replace the occupation scrip issued by the Germans. Because the Belgian government-in-exile lacked the capacity to produce coinage during the heat of the liberation, the United States Mint produced these coins on their behalf, utilizing the designs authorized by the Belgian authorities.

The design features the Belgian coat of arms on the obverse and the denomination on the reverse, maintaining a aesthetic continuity with pre-war Belgian currency to instill public confidence and stability. Composed of silver, these coins were intended to hold intrinsic value, distinguishing them from the debased or paper-based currency that had circulated during the years of occupation. Their circulation was strictly controlled by Allied military officials until the restoration of the Belgian National Bank's sovereign control over the monetary system.
