Where it came from
The 2019 Belgian 5 Euro coin was issued by the Royal Belgian Mint to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings during the Second World War. This commemorative issue serves as a tribute to the Allied forces who initiated the liberation of Western Europe on June 6, 1944. Such coins are part of a broader program by the Belgian state to honor significant historical milestones and preserve the memory of the conflict for future generations.
Designed by the artists at the Royal Belgian Mint, the coin features imagery intended to evoke the solemnity and historical weight of the Normandy landings. The design focuses on symbolic elements related to the maritime and military efforts of 1944. As a non-circulating legal tender piece, it was primarily distributed to collectors and numismatic enthusiasts interested in military history and commemorative coinage, receiving a standard reception among European numismatists as a high-quality historical memento.
