Where it came from
The 1987 25 Leva coin was minted by the Bulgarian National Bank to commemorate the upcoming 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. During this era, Bulgaria frequently issued silver and gold commemorative coins to participate in the global tradition of honoring Olympic host cities, a practice that served both as a tribute to international athletic cooperation and a way to engage with the global numismatic community.
The design of this coin reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1980s Bulgarian state minting, focusing on neoclassical relief work and symbolic representation of winter sports. The imagery typically incorporates stylized depictions of athletes alongside the Bulgarian state seal, executed with the high-relief technique common to the Balkan mints of the period. It was distributed primarily through state-sanctioned philatelic and numismatic agencies, intended for collectors interested in the intersection of sports history and Eastern Bloc commemorative production.
