Where it came from
The 2002 Austrian 2 Euro cent coin was introduced as part of the initial launch of the euro currency in Austria. It belongs to the first series of Austrian euro coins, which were designed to reflect the country's national identity by featuring distinct botanical motifs, architectural landmarks, and famous citizens, replacing the former Austrian schilling.
The design of the 2-cent coin features the edelweiss, a protected alpine flower that serves as a cultural symbol of Austria. Illustrated by Josef Kaiser, the choice of alpine flora was intended to evoke the natural beauty of the Austrian landscape. Upon its release, the coin was well-received for its clear, symbolic representation of national heritage within the broader European monetary union.
