Where it came from
The 2014 Andorran 2 euro cent coin was introduced following a 2011 monetary agreement between the Principality of Andorra and the European Union, which finally permitted the microstate to issue its own euro coins. Prior to this, Andorra had utilized the French franc and the Spanish peseta, and subsequently the euro, without having its own national currency. This specific issue marked the official beginning of Andorra's participation in the eurozone as a minting authority.
The design of the 2 cent coin features the Pyrenean chamois and the golden eagle, chosen to celebrate the unique biodiversity and natural heritage of the Andorran landscape. These national symbols were integrated into the standardized common European reverse side of the coin, reflecting Andorra's alignment with the wider continental monetary union while asserting its distinct cultural identity.
