2 Euros (European Union Flag)

The 2015 2-Euro commemorative coin featuring the European Union flag was issued by all nineteen eurozone member states, including Austria, to mark the 30th anniversary of the European flag as the official emblem of the European Union. The design was selected through an online public competition organized by the European Commission, where citizens across the continent cast their votes to choose a new common commemorative design to celebrate the flag's history and symbolism.

The winning design was created by Georgios Stamatopoulos, an engraver at the Bank of Greece. His work depicts the European flag as a symbol that unites people and cultures with shared visions and ideals for a better future, surrounded by twelve stars that evolve into human figures. The design was praised for its ability to merge the institutional symbolism of the European Union with a humanistic element, representing the unity and collective spirit of the member nations.
