Ex-Mutants: The Shattered Earth Chronicles #14

Ex-Mutants: The Shattered Earth Chronicles #14 was published in 1993 during the final stretch of the series' run at Malibu Comics. The story was rooted in the post-apocalyptic narrative established in the mid-1980s by creators David Lawrence and Ron Lim, which followed a group of human-mutant hybrids attempting to navigate a world decimated by nuclear fallout. By the time this fourteenth issue was released under the Malibu banner, the series was nearing its conclusion as the independent comic market shifted toward the grittier, hyper-stylized aesthetic common in the early nineties.

The creative direction for this period of the series aimed to provide a definitive resolution to the complex interpersonal conflicts of the protagonists, featuring art that leaned heavily into the dramatic, muscular house style prevalent at Malibu Comics at the time. While the series never reached the mainstream prominence of larger Marvel or DC titles, it maintains a dedicated following among collectors of independent speculative fiction from the era. The issue is noted primarily by enthusiasts for its place in completing the narrative arc of a cult-classic franchise that navigated multiple publishers throughout its existence.
