Where it came from
Guardians of the Galaxy #3, published by Marvel Comics in 1990, is a pivotal installment in the original series written by Jim Valentino. This era of the title reimagined the 31st-century cosmic team, grounding them in a gritty, high-stakes rebellion against the Badoon occupation of Earth's solar system. Valentino’s approach was noted for its blend of space opera tropes and character-driven narrative, which sought to establish the team as a cohesive unit amidst a fractured galactic political landscape.
The visual identity of this series was defined by Jim Valentino’s distinct, angular art style, which prioritized dynamic panel layouts to convey the vastness of deep space. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans of Marvel’s cosmic imprint for its willingness to explore complex themes of legacy and survival. It remains a significant touchstone in comic history as it solidified the modern foundational lore for the Guardians before the team’s eventual 2008 relaunch in the mainstream Marvel Universe.
