Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Dainibu #9

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Dainibu represents a definitive collected edition of Sanpei Shirato’s monumental gekiga series, Kamui-den. Originally serialized beginning in 1964, the series was a foundational text for the Garo magazine circle, exploring complex themes of feudal social structures, class struggle, and the life of a runaway ninja. This specific edition was produced to provide a comprehensive, high-quality archival format for the second part of the saga, preserving Shirato’s dense, ink-heavy artistic style and intricate narrative architecture for contemporary readers.

The design of this edition reflects the intent to treat manga as literature, favoring clear typography and structural consistency across the expansive run of the Zenshū. Shirato, alongside his brother and collaborator Tetsuya Okamoto, crafted a work that was widely received as a seminal piece of political and historical fiction. The series is celebrated for its unflinching examination of the caste system in Edo-period Japan, and this particular collection is valued by enthusiasts for its completeness and the care taken to retain the visual impact of the original black-and-white panels.
