Where it came from
Oltretomba was a long-running Italian horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. This series, along with others like Terror and Vampirissimo, emerged during the peak of Italy's 'fumetti neri' movement, which capitalized on a popular fascination with macabre, eroticized, and transgressive storytelling aimed at an adult demographic.
Issue number 35 of Oltretomba reflects the series' signature aesthetic, featuring lurid, high-contrast cover art designed to entice newsstand buyers. These issues were typically produced by a rotating team of illustrators and writers working under tight deadlines, emphasizing sensationalist plotlines and gothic atmosphere rather than long-form narrative cohesion, a hallmark of the low-cost pulp publishing landscape of the era.
