Where it came from
Oltretomba was a long-running Italian horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. This series, along with others like Terror and Vampirissimo, capitalized on the immense popularity of the fumetti neri genre in Italy, which featured dark, adult-oriented themes, suspense, and supernatural or gothic horror imagery designed to shock and entertain a mature readership.
Issue number 38 reflects the typical aesthetic of the series, featuring bold, often lurid cover art and stories that blended traditional pulp horror tropes with the idiosyncratic Italian style of the era. These comics were produced rapidly to satisfy a high-frequency publication schedule, relying on a stable of anonymous or pseudonym-using artists and writers who prioritized atmospheric storytelling over formal consistency, making them quintessential artifacts of mid-century Italian pop culture.
