Oltretomba #31

Oltretomba was a long-running Italian horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. This series, along with others like Terror and Vampirissimo, capitalized on the immense popularity of 'fumetti neri'—dark, macabre comics that pushed boundaries of taste and censorship in Italy. Issue number 31 appeared during the peak of this wave, a time when publishers saturated the market with inexpensive, pocket-sized digests designed for quick consumption at newsstands.

The aesthetic of Oltretomba was defined by a raw, gritty style characteristic of its era, often relying on jarring cover art meant to shock and intrigue the reader. While individual creators on these books were frequently uncredited or operated under pseudonyms to maintain a consistent house style, the series is now recognized as a fascinating artifact of Italian pop culture. It reflected a specific societal interest in the gothic and the erotic, serving as an accessible outlet for the dark pulp sensibilities that dominated Italian newsstands for over a decade.
