Where it came from
Oltretomba was a long-running Italian horror comic series published by Ediperiodici starting in the early 1970s, operating within the popular 'fumetti neri' genre. This specific issue, number 45, was produced during the peak of the series' influence, where it leaned heavily into gothic atmosphere, macabre storytelling, and the exploitative visual tropes characteristic of the period's pocket-sized digest format.
The series relied on a rotating team of illustrators and writers who favored dark, surrealist aesthetics meant to appeal to adult readers seeking transgressive fiction. Like many issues in the Oltretomba run, the design of number 45 emphasizes striking, high-contrast cover art meant to stand out on crowded newsstands, reflecting the utilitarian and sensationalist graphic design standards common in Italy's mass-market comic industry at the time.
