Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in 1992, Warlock and the Infinity Watch #3 emerged during the peak of Jim Starlin’s cosmic comic book renaissance. The series was created to manage the aftermath of The Infinity Gauntlet, tasking Adam Warlock with sequestering the six Infinity Gems among a group of guardians. This specific issue features the writing of Starlin and the distinct, character-driven pencil work of Angel Medina, who stepped in to provide a grittier visual tone to the burgeoning team dynamic.
The design of this era centered on the juxtaposition of high-concept cosmic philosophy with the clashing personalities of the team, including Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, and Moondragon. At the time of its release, the title was well-received by fans of Marvel’s space-faring lore, praised for expanding upon the political and psychological stakes of cosmic guardianship rather than relying solely on traditional superhero tropes. It remains a hallmark of 1990s Marvel space opera.
