Where it came from
The Bob's Big Boy Pop! Pez dispenser, numbered 4 in the series, was released by Funko as part of their expansion into the classic confectionery collectibles market. The item draws inspiration from the iconic Big Boy mascot, created in 1936 by Bob Wian for his California drive-in restaurant. The character, based on a young customer named Richard Woodruff, became a quintessential symbol of mid-century American diner culture and the post-war fast-food boom.
Funko’s design team adapted the recognizable red-and-white checked overall-clad mascot into their signature stylized vinyl aesthetic. By integrating the character with the retro Pez dispenser format, the piece appeals to collectors of advertising memorabilia and pop culture artifacts alike. It reflects a trend in contemporary manufacturing where heritage brands are reimagined through modern, collectible-focused design languages, maintaining the familiar iconography that has resonated with the public for generations.
