Where it came from
Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting as a character on a coin purse. The design aesthetic, rooted in the Japanese 'kawaii' culture, emphasizes simplicity and emotional relatability, intentionally leaving the character without a mouth to allow fans to project their own feelings onto her. Over decades, she evolved from a stationary character into a global pop-culture icon, eventually leading to licensing partnerships that brought her likeness to a vast array of consumer products.
Funko released this specific Pop! figure as part of its Sanrio series, assigning it number 155 to align with their stylized vinyl collectible line. The figure adheres to the brand's signature aesthetic, characterized by a large, squared-off head and simplified facial features, which successfully translates the minimalism of the original character into the company's distinct 3.75-inch form factor. It remains a staple of the Sanrio collaboration, widely collected by fans of both the long-standing character and the broader pop-culture vinyl movement.
