Where it came from
Hello Kitty was originally designed by Yuko Shimizu for Sanrio in 1974, first appearing on a vinyl coin purse in 1975. The character was created to tap into a market for cute, anthropomorphic designs that resonated with young consumers in Japan. Her minimalist aesthetic, characterized by a lack of a mouth and simple geometric shapes, was intended to allow the consumer to project their own emotions onto the figure, a design philosophy that contributed to her global longevity.
The Funko Pop! iteration, numbered 01 in the Sanrio series, translates this iconic design into the signature vinyl aesthetic popularized by Funko. Released as part of the broader Sanrio collection, the figure adheres to the company's trademark large-head, stylized-body format. It was designed to appeal to both long-time fans of the character and the growing community of vinyl toy collectors, quickly becoming a foundational piece for those documenting the Pop! Sanrio line.
