Where it came from
Hello Kitty, the iconic character created by Sanrio in 1974, was originally designed by Yuko Shimizu. The character was developed as a cute, minimalist motif to adorn stationery and gift items, quickly evolving into a global cultural phenomenon representing the 'kawaii' aesthetic. The Funko Pop! iteration, numbered 57 in the Sanrio series, translates this classic design into the company's signature stylized vinyl form, emphasizing her distinctive red bow and simplified facial features.
This specific figure was released under the 'POP!s with Purpose' initiative, a program designed to highlight charitable partnerships and social causes. By aligning the Hello Kitty brand with this series, Funko aimed to leverage the widespread appeal of the character to support broader philanthropic goals. The design maintains the core visual language of the character while fitting into the established collectible ecosystem of the Pop! line, which has become a staple of contemporary pop culture merchandising.
