Where it came from
The Split Kit Funko Pop figure, numbered 9 in the Garbage Pail Kids series, draws inspiration from the iconic 1980s trading card phenomenon created by Topps. First released as a satirical response to the Cabbage Patch Kids craze, the original character artwork was produced by a team of artists including John Pound, who established the brand’s grotesque yet humorous aesthetic. Funko adapted this specific character, known for its literal self-division, to translate the two-dimensional macabre charm of the original cards into a stylized vinyl collectible format.
The design of the figure captures the signature visual shorthand of the Garbage Pail Kids line, emphasizing exaggerated features and vibrant colors that pay homage to the 1980s underground art scene. When Funko launched this series, it aimed to tap into a wave of nostalgia for Generation X collectors who grew up with the trading cards. The reception has been consistent with other figures in the Pop! GPK line, appealing primarily to long-time fans of the franchise and collectors of pop-culture kitsch who appreciate the blend of classic vinyl toy manufacturing and irreverent retro imagery.
