Where it came from
Abiding Grace was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set, a specialized product designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce cards directly into the Modern format without passing through Standard. The set aimed to blend high-powered, complex mechanical designs with a celebration of Magic: The Gathering's history, often utilizing 'timeshifted' frames to evoke nostalgia for older aesthetics. The card itself functions as an enchantment centered on graveyard recursion, reflecting the set's emphasis on intricate synergy and resource management.
The artwork for Abiding Grace was created by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who is well known for her ethereal and emotive style within the Magic: The Gathering art community. Her design sought to convey a sense of divine protection and steady, rhythmic recovery, aligning with the card's mechanical utility. Upon its release, the card received moderate attention from players for its potential in white-based midrange and soul-sisters style decks, where its ability to return small creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield provides a persistent advantage during longer games.
