Authority of the Consuls

Authority of the Consuls was originally released as a rare enchantment in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Kaladesh. The set drew significant aesthetic inspiration from steampunk, art deco, and Indian architecture, focusing on a world defined by magical invention and the ruling bureaucratic body known as the Consulate. This specific promo version, identified by collector number 5s, was distributed through the Wizards Play Network as a participation reward for players engaging in official store events during the set's promotional window.

The card was illustrated by Lake Hurwitz, who leaned into the ornate, golden motifs central to the Kaladesh visual identity. The design emphasizes the authoritarian control of the ruling regime, visually represented by the Consulate's rigid, glowing energy architecture. Upon its release, the card became a staple in tournament play, particularly in the Standard and Commander formats, where its ability to neutralize creature-heavy strategies made it a highly functional and sought-after piece for players.
