Where it came from
Ajani, Sleeper Agent was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set, specifically appearing in a showcase frame variant designated for promotional use. This card depicts the character Ajani Goldmane after his secret corruption by the Phyrexians, a central narrative arc during the return to the plane of Dominaria. The design reflects the visual language of the Phyrexian aesthetic, utilizing specialized typography and a stylized border treatment that distinguishes it from standard set cards.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist within the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character work. Her portrayal of the sleeper agent variant focuses on the ominous transformation of a previously heroic figure, leaning into the darker, biomechanical themes established by the Phyrexian invasion storyline. Upon release, the card was received as a significant narrative reveal, with players and collectors noting the stark contrast between this unsettling imagery and the character's traditional appearance.
