Where it came from
Author of Shadows was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured in the Silverquill Statement preconstructed deck. This set was designed to explore the flavor of the Strixhaven: School of Mages plane, focusing on five distinct colleges. As a card representing the Orzhov-aligned faction of Silverquill, it embodies the college's theme of manipulating shadows and social influence to achieve strategic advantages in gameplay.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Lucas Graciano, who utilized a dark, atmospheric palette to emphasize the card's supernatural and scholarly aesthetic. By visually representing the act of retrieving items from an opponent's graveyard, the design reinforces the card's function as a utility piece that exploits an opponent's past resources. It was received by players as a flexible mid-game tool, valued primarily for its ability to generate card advantage while disrupting the resources of adversaries.
