Where it came from
Author of Shadows was released in 2021 as part of the Silverquill Statement Commander deck, a thematic set associated with the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the aesthetic and mechanical identity of the Silverquill college, which emphasizes political intrigue, manipulation, and the interplay of light and shadow.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the elegant yet sinister nature of the Orzhov-aligned faction. The artwork features a stylized figure cloaked in shadows, reflecting the theme of 'authoring' reality through death and memory. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its unique ability to disrupt opponent graveyards while providing tactical card advantage, fitting seamlessly into various black-white aristocrat and control strategies.
